Horror Hotel – DVD
Horror Hotel (1960) is a chilling supernatural classic starring Christopher Lee, Venetia Stevenson, Betta St. John, Patricia Jessel, and Valentine Dyall. The story reaches back to 1692 in the fog‑shrouded, fictional town of Whitewood, Massachusetts, where the witch Elizabeth Selwyn (Patricia Jessel) is burned at the stake. Before her execution, Selwyn and her accomplice Jethrow Keane (Valentine Dyall) pledge their souls to the devil in exchange for eternal life—on the condition that they deliver two virgin sacrifices each year at the thirteenth hour of Candlemass and the Witches’ Sabbath.
Centuries later, Professor Driscoll (Christopher Lee) urges his student Nan Barlow (Venetia Stevenson) to visit Whitewood for research on witchcraft. She checks into the eerie Raven’s Inn, where she meets Patricia Russell (Betta St. John), who lends her a book on local occult history. Nan soon discovers that her arrival coincides with Candlemass Eve—and that the inn’s owner, Mrs. Newless (also played by Patricia Jessel), is far more sinister than she appears. Drawn into the inn’s basement, Nan becomes the next intended sacrifice of Selwyn’s resurrected coven.
When Nan disappears, her fiancé Bill Maitland (Tom Naylor) launches a desperate search through misty graveyards, abandoned churches, and occult‑ridden corners of Whitewood. What follows is a tense, atmospheric descent into witchcraft, ritual, and terror.
A standout of early 1960s horror, Horror Hotel delivers moody cinematography, gothic suspense, and a memorable performance from one of the genre’s most iconic actors, Christopher Lee.
