Plot Synopsis

“Speak No Evil” follows the story of a Danish family, Bjørn, Louise, and their daughter Agnes, who are invited by their new acquaintances, Patrick, Karin, and their son Abel, to spend a weekend at their remote country house in the Netherlands. The two families met on vacation the previous summer and bonded over their shared desire for a more “organic” and less inhibited lifestyle.

Initially, the visit seems to be everything they hoped for – idyllic scenery, good food, and friendly company. However, subtle social faux pas and increasingly bizarre behavior from their hosts begin to chip away at the guests’ comfort. Patrick and Karin exhibit an unnerving lack of boundaries, from their blunt and often offensive remarks to their disregard for personal space and noise levels, particularly concerning their son Abel, who appears to have a condition that makes him unnervingly quiet and observant.

Bjørn and Louise, desperately trying to avoid confrontation and maintain politeness, find themselves increasingly stifled by their hosts’ eccentricities and their own inability to express their discomfort. Minor incidents, like Agnes being woken by Abel’s crying and Patrick’s intrusive questions about their sex life, are brushed aside. However, as the weekend progresses, the unsettling events escalate from awkward to downright disturbing. The line between acceptable social behavior and outright psychological manipulation becomes blurred, leading to a horrifying and inevitable climax that explores the terrifying extremes of social obligation and the devastating cost of staying silent.
