I was exposed to Horror recently in side scrolling games and I wanted to touch on a few of my favourites all of which I have completed and can personal vouch are challenging ang have you comming back.

The first is a bit retro and not exactly horror but is a dystopian future with unsettling undertones and if like me you get Microsoft Rewards its inexpensive on XBOX:

Horror in Games - Side Scrollers

🧠 Game Synopsis: Flashback

In the year 2142, scientist and agent Conrad B. Hart awakens on Titan, a colonized moon of Saturn, stripped of his memory and hunted by mysterious forces. As Conrad, you must piece together your identity and unravel a sinister alien conspiracy threatening Earth. The journey spans multiple planets, blending cinematic storytelling with platforming and puzzle-solving in a dystopian future.

Horror in Games - Side Scrollers

Originally released in 1992, Flashback was reimagined for modern consoles to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The Xbox One version, released on November 20, 2018, features updated visuals, remastered sound, and enhanced cutscenes.

🕷️ Horror Undertones: A Sci-Fi Nightmare
While not a horror game in genre, Flashback drips with psychological unease and existential dread. The amnesia plot, eerie alien environments, and constant sense of being hunted evoke a creeping paranoia. The game’s ambient soundscape and shadowy visuals amplify the tension, making Conrad’s quest feel like a descent into madness as much as a mission to save humanity.

The second I wanted to visit was Little Nightmares, I have yet to play the sequels and DLC but it really has a dark feel to it and really has some plastecine stop motion horror vibes and reminds me of watching Phil Tippett’s Mad God which I have linked. It has challenging puzzles and you will be trying to figure out what is going on as things unravel.

🧥 Game Synopsis: Little Nightmares

Released on Xbox One on April 28, 2017, Little Nightmares is a suspenseful puzzle-platformer developed by Tarsier Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. You play as Six, a small girl in a yellow raincoat, trapped in the Maw—a grotesque underwater vessel filled with monstrous inhabitants. Armed only with a lighter and your wits, you must sneak, solve puzzles, and survive as you uncover the Maw’s disturbing secrets.

The game’s minimalist storytelling and immersive design create a surreal, dreamlike experience that’s both beautiful and terrifying.

🩸 Horror Undertones: Childhood Fears Reimagined
Little Nightmares doesn’t rely on jump scares—it thrives on atmosphere. The game explores primal fears: being small in a world of giants, hunger that turns feral, and the dread of being watched. Each level is a twisted dollhouse, where grotesque characters like the Janitor and the Twin Chefs stalk you through shadowy corridors. The sound design and visual storytelling evoke a constant sense of unease, making every moment feel like a waking nightmare.

🌑 Game Synopsis: Limbo

Limbo is a 2D puzzle-platformer developed by Playdead, first released on Xbox 360 in 2010 and later ported to Xbox One on December 5, 2014. You play as a nameless boy who awakens in a monochrome forest on the “edge of hell,” searching for his missing sister. The journey unfolds through eerie landscapes filled with deadly traps, hostile figures, and surreal environments.

Horror in Games - Side Scrollers

Gameplay is built around physics-based puzzles and trial-and-error mechanics. The stark black-and-white visuals, ambient sound design, and absence of dialogue create a hauntingly immersive experience.

🕷️ Horror Undertones: Death by Design
Though not a traditional horror game, Limbo is steeped in dread. Its “trial and death” gameplay forces players to confront gruesome fates—impalement, drowning, dismemberment—each rendered in stark silhouette. The giant spider, eerie industrial ruins, and faceless enemies evoke primal fears. The minimalist style amplifies the horror, making each moment feel like a quiet scream in the dark.

🧠 Game Synopsis: Inside

Horror in Games - Side Scrollers

Developed by Playdead and released on Xbox One on June 29, 2016, Inside is a 2.5D puzzle-platformer that follows a silent boy navigating a bleak, monochromatic world. As he flees from faceless pursuers and explores a mysterious facility, he uncovers a disturbing experiment that blurs the line between control and autonomy. The game is a spiritual successor to Limbo, expanding its themes with deeper mechanics and richer visual storytelling.

Gameplay revolves around environmental puzzles, stealth, and physics-based interactions. The boy can manipulate objects, control bodies, and evade deadly threats like dogs, guards, and underwater creatures.

🩸 Horror Undertones: Dystopia in Silence
Inside is a masterclass in atmospheric horror. It never screams—it whispers. The world is cold, oppressive, and eerily quiet, punctuated by sudden violence and grotesque imagery. The player is constantly vulnerable, and the lack of dialogue heightens the sense of isolation. The final act introduces a grotesque biological entity that redefines the horror of control, conformity, and identity.

Themes of surveillance, experimentation, and loss of agency make Inside feel like a playable Orwellian nightmare.

An honourable mention but not a side scroller but definitely heavy on horror aspects is Hello Neighbor.

🏠 Game Synopsis: Hello Neighbor

In Hello Neighbor, you play as Nicky Roth, a curious boy who suspects his neighbor, Mr. Peterson, is hiding something sinister in his basement. The game begins with Nicky witnessing disturbing behavior and sets out to uncover the truth by sneaking into the neighbor’s house. But Mr. Peterson isn’t just any NPC—he’s powered by adaptive AI that learns your tactics and sets traps accordingly.

Horror in Games - Side Scrollers

Released on Xbox One on December 8, 2017, the game blends puzzle-solving, stealth mechanics, and environmental storytelling in a suburban setting that grows increasingly surreal and threatening.

🕷️ Horror Undertones: Suburban Nightmare
Hello Neighbor thrives on psychological tension. The horror isn’t in gore or monsters—it’s in the uncanny behavior of Mr. Peterson, the eerie silence of the neighborhood, and the surreal nightmare sequences that blur reality. Themes of trauma, abduction, and buried secrets unfold through cryptic environmental clues and dreamlike acts. The game’s childlike art style contrasts sharply with its dark undertones, creating a dissonant, unsettling atmosphere.
